2005 Conference

Ayurvedic Healing

Electromagnetic Healing

The first of what was to become a series of conferences on “Science of Whole Person Healing” was held at the Holiday Inn Bethesda from March 28–30. The conference brought together, possibly for the first time, a genuinely interdisciplinary mix of senior scientists and engineering familiar with the literature of WPH; individual practitioners and researchers working on ancestral practices, or modern devices applicable to such practices; physicians conducting research in WPH practices; laity interested in the results; along with representatives of federal funding agencies.

Harmful potential of viral vectors fuels doubt over gene therapy

More bad news for the magic potion that never made it. The troubled field of gene therapy was dealt a fresh blow this week, after a study suggested that modified viruses used in some trials might cause health problems. For details, see Nature 423 (5 June 2003), p 573. Full text is also available online.

Drugs and placebos look alike in the brain

Belief is real! Researchers in Sweden and Finland say they have finally shown what scientists have long suspected: that a placebo activates the same brain circuits as painkilling drugs. Read more in Science 295 (8 February 2002), p. 947, also available online for subscribers.

Drug Sales Bring Huge Profits, And Scrutiny, to Cancer Doctors

At a time when overall spending on prescription drugs is soaring, cancer specialists are pocketing hundreds of millions of dollars each year by selling drugs to patients—a practice that almost no other doctors follow. The cancer specialists can make huge sums—often the majority of their practice revenue—from the difference between what they pay for the drugs and what they charge insurers and government programs. But some private health insurers are now studying ways to reduce these profits, and the issue is getting close attention in Congress. Read more in Reed Abelson’s article in the Sunday, January 26, 2003 edition of the New York Times, also available online.
