Someone once said; “Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can live the rest of your life like most people can’t.” Entrepreneurship then, isn’t a-given. It is earned. But then again, so is a regular job, and both have their own pros and cons. So how do the two differ from each other in terms of the goals, and success? By entrepreneurship, I don’t just mean Bill Gate’s, or Mark Zuckerberg’s success story. Even freelancing or blogging is a form of entrepreneurship. So what sets the two apart, and how can one claim entrepreneurship to be a better deal than a regular job?
The mindset
One of the major differences between the two, I would have to say, is the mindset of the two types of people. Some people obviously have an inherent aversion to the idea of not knowing where, or when their next pay cheque is coming from. And even though they admire the freedom freelancers and entrepreneurs enjoy, they would still prefer their own job security. Hence, most are unwilling to change, which can sometimes become the limiting factor.
On the other hand, entrepreneurs prefer to think of regular jobs as ‘chains’. Even though freelancing also requires them to report to a supervisor or a client, many would prefer that to a regular job, because they can then go for a job of their own choosing, and stick with it or leave it if they want. So the stress is relatively lesser, which lets them be more productive and creative.
Willingness to take risks
As an entrepreneur or a freelancer, it is very difficult to ascertain where you’ll be in the near or distant future. You never know what’s coming your way (and what isn’t), and this adds to the risk factor involved. Not everyone is willing to take the risk, but with entrepreneurs, it’s not an option. That is one of the cons. But on the plus side, they get to experiment with various opportunities that are simply not available to regular office goers. That is why you see very few regulars who’re billionaires. Most of the richest people in the world today are entrepreneurs.
The comfort zone
Imagine yourself sitting in your living room, sipping a cup of coffee, and working for your clients. How much more comfortable can you possibly get? Oh, no wait. You can crank it a notch up and lie down in your bed while working, because that’s the beauty of working from home. Comparatively, office routine sucks. You have to get ready everyday, take up a long commute on your way to work and waste time travelling, and then spend the rest of your day sitting behind a desk. Now if you tell me that’d you’d rather be in the second scenario, then you’re probably better off doing office work than reading this article!
The point being, that while regular jobs might have the security you want, entrepreneurship and freelancing offer the comforts that you need. In addition, entrepreneurship can take you to greater heights than an office job ever will. I’m not saying yo should quit your job. But there’s a whole new chasm you still have to explore! Being entrepreneur also opens wide opportunity to achieve personal goals with regards of advancement and a chance to succeed in the industry. It’s more challenging than to work in a four corner room but you should have determination and proper mindset to be able to go outside the box.
